Through misuse, age or malfunction, components used in fluid power systems can fail in various modes. The system designer is warned to consider the failure modes of all component parts used in fluid power systems and to provide adequate safeguards to prevent personal injury or damage to equipment in the event of such failure.
System designers must provide a warning to end-users in the system instructional manual if protection against a failure mode cannot be adequately provided.
SINGLE-ACTING rams:
When using a double-acting ram, in a single acting application, the drain port should be connected to the top of the tank to:
- prevent ingress of air/dust/moisture
- take away eventual leakage
Sometimes this is not possible and a breather must be screwed into the port. This should be facing downwards or away from direct rain etc.
When the ram is retracted, air (including dust or moisture) is drawn directly into the cylinder eventually causing seal wear and/or corrosion.
A displacement cylinder has no piston and requires no breather.
